STILL HERE pop-up exhibition on until 23 July at Tautai Gallery

Open now until 23 July, we are hosting a pop-up exhibition that marks the launch of STILL HERE, a four-part docu-series that celebrates the small but mighty Pacific community of inner-city Auckland who have remained despite decades of rampant gentrification. The series and the pop-up exhibition have been produced by Four and Five Films, director Litia Tuiburelevu and producer Torisse Laulu. The series is available to view now in the exhibition and on TVNZ’s Re:

Through moving image and portrait stills by photographer Geoffery Matautia, STILL HERE weaves intergenerational stories of family, community and culture, dispelling the myth that “all the Islanders have left.” While these four episodes and twenty portraits only capture a slice of the community, STILL HERE is a love letter for those that came before, those who stay and for their future generations.

Produced for this pop-up exhibition, Geoffery Matautia’s portraits depict 20 families currently living in Auckland’s central suburbs. The series is an extension of Geoffery’s hugely popular Southside portraits, that depicted families living in South Auckland during the 2021 lockdown.

Check out their Artist Spotlight where Litia, Torisse and Geoffery chat describe their experiences when creating STILL HERE. They chat about the importance of acknowledging the decades of connection between Central Auckland and Pasifika identity.

“It's like a love letter to a community that like was, is and still will be. It's really beautiful thinking about it in that way that it's more than just a piece of content, but yeah something that is timeless.” - Torisse Laulu
