Tena Koe,

(My name is TeRina Heeni Mana-Tukaha)

Ko Hikurangi tōku maunga
Ko Tawa puku tōku awa
Ko Ngātokimatawhāorua tōku waka
Ko Ngāpuhi tōku iwi
Ko Ngāti Mahia tōku hapū
Ko Wihongi mea Ko Heke ōku whanau
No Awarua ahau
Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa.

This artwork in progress was born out of pinnacle moment in my life.

At the age of 16 years old my mother told me that I was supposed to have been aborted.

She had gone to the family doctor to get an abortion, however as she was one month too late she was unable to get the abortion and so I lived.

I have lived up until the deaths of both my mother and father knowing and feeling that I was unwanted. Within this artwork is all the positive affirmations that I did not hear during my life with my parents, Kua whakanekeneke ahau mo āku tamariki, it is my conscious shift for my 7 children to instil within them, the following attributes in te reo Māori: fearless, strong, educated, beautiful, grateful, decolonising, descendant of Māori and most importantly knowing they are loved by me.

“Kei roto i tō tātou reo tētahi rongoā.
Kei te āhua o te reo, kei te wairua o te reo.
Mā tō tātou reo e mirimiri me te hinengaro”

(There is healing within our language. It is in the way we speak and the spirit in which it is spoken. Let us use our language to massage our spirit, our soul and emotions)

Ngā tikanga Tōtika 2001 – Milne.

Words have the ability to heal us especially when they are spoken into our lives.

Nga mihi nui,
TeRina
