Meet the Artist: Rawiri Brown

Tēnā koutou katoa! Introducing Oh My Ocean artist
Rawiri Brown

Rawiri Brown (Ngāriki Kaiputahi, Ngāti Raukawa, Cook Island Māori) is a fashion and textile designer who has worked in the fashion industry for more than 15 years. His designs highlight the skilled craft and creative process involved in garment and textile making. Through his practice, Rawiri explores the relationship between design and textiles with nostalgia, humour and the ability to imbue meaning into everyday objects. For his 2020 Fale-ship, Rawiri developed his capsule collection Happy Endings, presenting garments that drew inspiration from his hometown Ōtaki and, in particular, the town’s motto “Sunny Ōtaki”, which is reflected in the collection’s tongue-in-cheek humour.

As an independent designer, Rawiri has participated in various exhibitions and local collectives and often shows his designs in gallery settings. He has exhibited at Papatūnga Gallery, Objectspace and the Mairangi Art Centre.
