Iata Peautolu!

Iata Peautolu is a Niuean (Fineone Hakupu Atua) and Māori (Te Whānau-a-Apanui) contemporary artist who expresses his identity through a variety of mediums and platforms. He has been involved in the performing arts as a Polynesian dancer for 20 years and currently performs with Tauira Mai Tawhiti kapa haka group at Matatini level. His creative practice includes painting, illustration, fashion and graphic design influenced by his urban upbringing in Hamilton and features a combination of imagery drawn from his dual heritage.  

The iconography in his body of work investigates migration and navigation practices from the Pacific, which he uses to develop his visual narratives. Through his work, Iata aims to showcase the beauty, strength, dignity and mana of his people through his own lens.
